Cabling decisions are made in a hurry, under fit-out pressure, and then live for fifteen years. Switches get replaced, access points get replaced, the cable in the ceiling almost never does — and replacing it later means reopening a finished office.
The technical difference, briefly
Both categories support 10 Gigabit Ethernet, but not equally. Cat6 supports 10G over reduced distances and is sensitive to alien crosstalk in densely bundled runs; Cat6A is specified for 10G across the full channel length and is engineered to resist that crosstalk. Cat6A cable is physically larger, with tighter bend-radius requirements and greater pathway fill.
That last point is the one most often missed. Choosing Cat6A is not only a cable decision — it affects containment sizing, tray fill, patch panel density and the practicality of routing in a ceiling void that was designed around thinner cable.
Where Cat6A earns its cost
- Wireless backhaul. Current-generation access points can exceed a gigabit. Cabling to AP positions is the clearest case for Cat6A, and the cheapest place to future-proof.
- Long horizontal runs. Where the channel approaches the distance limit, Cat6A removes the ambiguity about what will run over it later.
- Dense bundles. Large open-plan floors with heavily bundled runs are exactly the conditions in which alien crosstalk degrades Cat6 performance.
- Higher-power PoE devices. Larger conductor sizes handle power-related heat rise more comfortably, which matters in bundled runs and warm plenum spaces.
- Long tenancy or owned premises. If you will still be in the building in a decade, the installed cost difference is small against a second fit-out.
Where Cat6 is still the right call
Short-term leases, standard desk outlets serving laptops and phones, retrofit work in constrained pathways, and secondary spaces where the traffic profile is well understood — in these cases Cat6 remains a competent, correctly specified choice, and the saving is real.
A common and sensible pattern in UAE offices is mixed: Cat6A to access points, risers and any position with a plausible high-bandwidth future, Cat6 to ordinary desk outlets. That gets most of the benefit without paying for it everywhere.
What matters more than the category
We have tested plenty of Cat6A installations that underperform good Cat6. The category sets a ceiling; the installation determines whether you reach it.
- Bend radius respected throughout, including inside the rack.
- Untwist kept to the specified minimum at every termination.
- Separation from power cabling and other sources of interference.
- Pathway fill within limits, with room for future additions.
- Components from a consistent, matched channel rather than mixed opportunistically.
- Labelling applied at both ends and recorded, so faults are traceable.
- Heat considered — plenum temperatures in the region are not a footnote.
Insist on certification results
Whatever category you choose, every link should be tested with a calibrated field tester to the applicable standard, and you should receive the results per link, not a summary e-mail stating that testing was carried out. Those reports are the only objective evidence that the channel performs as specified — and the only leverage you have if it does not.
