How many cameras does a site actually need?

Camera count follows from the questions the system has to answer, not from floor area. Each viewpoint should have a defined purpose — identify a face at an entrance, read a plate at a gate, observe activity across a yard — and the lens, mounting height and position follow from that purpose. A site survey typically reduces the number of cameras a client expected while improving what the footage is actually usable for.

How long should recordings be retained?

Retention is a business and, in some sectors, a compliance decision. It is driven by how long an incident typically takes to come to light, any obligations your organisation is subject to, and the storage that implies. Retention should be agreed before the design is fixed, because it directly determines storage sizing and cost.

Do CCTV cameras need dedicated network cabling?

IP cameras are normally powered and connected over structured cabling using Power over Ethernet, so cabling design is part of the CCTV design rather than an afterthought. Cable routes, distance limits, switch capacity and power budgets all need to be planned together, which is why we handle surveillance and cabling as one piece of work.

Will video analytics work reliably on our site?

Analytics performance depends heavily on camera placement, lighting, image quality and the scene itself. Line crossing, intrusion detection and people or vehicle classification can work well when the scene is designed for them, and produce constant false alerts when cameras are positioned badly. We assess feasibility during the survey rather than promising outcomes in advance.

Can we view cameras remotely and securely?

Yes, and it should be designed deliberately. Remote access needs authenticated accounts, appropriate network segmentation, controlled exposure to the internet and a clear record of who can see what. Surveillance systems reachable from the internet with default credentials are one of the most common weaknesses we find on existing sites.

What are our obligations around surveillance in the UAE?

Surveillance in the UAE is subject to regulatory requirements that vary by emirate, premises type and sector, and these are reviewed by the relevant authorities rather than by an installer. We design to your stated requirements and recommend that you confirm the applicable obligations for your premises with the competent authority or your legal advisers before installation.

Most disappointing CCTV systems were installed competently. The cameras work, the recorder records, and the footage is still useless when it is needed — because nobody agreed in advance what each camera was for.

We approach surveillance the other way round. Decide what the system must be able to prove, design each viewpoint to deliver that, then size the network, storage and retention to support it. It is a slower conversation at the start and a far shorter one after an incident.

From survey to maintenance

Nine stages that turn a camera count into a system your security and operations teams can rely on.

Site survey

We walk the site and record what the design has to work with: entrances and exits, movement patterns, sightlines, lighting conditions, ceiling and mounting options, existing cabling, power availability and any areas requiring particular care.

Purpose per viewpoint

Every camera position is assigned an objective — identification, recognition, observation or general monitoring. That objective sets the resolution, lens, mounting height and angle, and prevents the common outcome of comprehensive coverage that identifies nobody.

Network and bandwidth design

Camera streams are traffic. We size switching and Power over Ethernet capacity, plan cable routes within distance limits, and separate surveillance from general business traffic so neither degrades the other.

Recording, storage and retention

Storage is sized from the agreed retention period, stream settings and camera count, with resilience considered for the recordings that matter most. Retention is decided first, because it drives everything downstream.

Lighting and environment

Glare, backlight, low light, dust, heat and washdown areas all affect what a camera can deliver. We account for environmental conditions and enclosure ratings at design stage rather than after the first unusable night-time recording.

Analytics and video management

Where analytics genuinely help — line crossing, intrusion, loitering, people and vehicle classification — they are configured against scenes designed for them, and tuned so alerts stay credible to the people monitoring them.

Remote access and user control

Authenticated remote and mobile access, defined user roles, and controlled exposure of the system, so operations gains visibility without opening an unmanaged door into the estate.

Commissioning and documentation

Each camera is verified against its stated purpose in real conditions, day and night. You receive camera schedules, layouts, configuration records and handover documentation, plus training for the people who will use the system.

Maintenance

Cleaning, focus checks, firmware currency, recording verification and storage health on a scheduled cycle — because a surveillance system nobody maintains is discovered to be broken at exactly the wrong moment.
