When a logistics client asks us to review an existing camera estate, the complaint is rarely that cameras are missing. It is that the footage does not settle the argument — the plate is unreadable, the face is a silhouette against the bay door, or the incident happened three weeks ago and the recording is gone.
Each of those is a design decision made without a stated purpose. Warehouse sites are unusually unforgiving in this respect, because they combine extreme lighting contrast, long sightlines, vehicle movement and high ceilings in one building.
Start with the questions, not the plan
Before any camera position is marked, agree what the system must be able to prove. On a typical distribution site that list includes: who entered the premises and in which vehicle; which vehicle was on which bay and when; what was loaded or unloaded; who accessed high-value or bonded areas; and what happened during a safety incident.
Each question implies a level of detail — identification, recognition or observation — and that level dictates resolution, lens, mounting height and angle. It also tells you where a camera is not needed, which is usually the more valuable output.
Zone by zone
Gate and entry line
Plate capture is a dedicated camera task, not a by-product of an overview camera. It needs a tight field of view along the vehicle path, appropriate shutter behaviour for moving vehicles, and consideration of headlight glare after dark. Pair it with a separate overview camera; one device rarely does both well.
Loading bays
The hardest lighting problem on the site: bright exterior daylight behind a dark interior. Cameras positioned to look straight out of an open bay door will silhouette everyone. Angle across the bay rather than through it, and specify for wide dynamic range.
Racking aisles
Racking blocks sightlines, so aisle coverage is a per-aisle decision, not a corner camera. Decide whether you need to observe activity or identify individuals — the answer changes the camera count materially.
Yard and perimeter
Long distances, dust, heat and low ambient light at night. This is where analytics such as line crossing and intrusion detection genuinely help, provided the scene is designed for them and the alerts are tuned to stay credible.
High-value and restricted areas
Bonded stores, cages and server rooms benefit from surveillance integrated with access control, so a door event and its footage can be reviewed as one record rather than correlated by hand.
Retention decides the budget
Storage sizing follows from retention, camera count and stream settings — so retention has to be agreed before the design is priced, not adjusted downwards afterwards to fit the recorder someone already bought. Base it on how long incidents typically take to surface in your operation, and on any obligations your organisation is subject to.
Bear in mind that reducing frame rate or bit rate to fit a retention target quietly reduces the evidential value of every recording. It is better to size storage honestly.
Network, power and environment
Camera streams are network traffic and cameras are powered devices. Switch capacity, Power over Ethernet budgets, cable distances and separation from business traffic all belong in the design. In warehouse environments, add heat, dust, vibration and washdown areas to the specification of enclosures and mounting.
Commission against the questions
At handover, walk the site with the original list and verify each camera against its stated purpose, in daylight and after dark, with the site operating normally. A camera that looks correct on a commissioning form and fails that test has not been commissioned.
Then keep it working. Lenses attract dust, focus drifts, firmware ages and disks fail. Scheduled maintenance is the difference between a surveillance system and a set of cameras.
